PORTALES, N.M. (April 1, 2022) –
Kali Crandall and
Grace Anderson each pitched a complete game and
Aaliyah Brown had four hits and five RBIs to lead No. 22-ranked Oklahoma Christian to a 7-2, 8-1 doubleheader sweep over Eastern New Mexico on Friday afternoon at the Greyhound Softball Field.
With the sweep, OC (26-8, 14-4 Lone Star Conference) moved into a four-way tie for second place in the rugged LSC, two games behind league-leading Texas A&M-Commerce. The Eagles have won 12 straight games – matching the sixth-longest streak in program history – headed into a showdown on Sunday at No. 20 West Texas A&M, the defending NCAA Division II national champion. WT ended OC's 2021 season in the Division II South Central Regional.
After OC pitching combined to allow only 12 hits in sweeps of Midwestern State (Texas) and Texas Woman's, Crandall (12-6) and Anderson (9-2) gave up only eight hits to Eastern New Mexico (10-24, 3-15) in the doubleheader. Crandall finished with six strikeouts while Anderson had seven.
Brown recorded OC's first RBI of the day on a sacrifice fly during a three-run first inning for the Eagles in the opener off Eastern New Mexico starter Brook Leger.
Brooklin Bain's solo home run in the third inning and a sacrifice fly by
Chloe Woodward in the fifth made it 5-0.
The Greyhounds had three of their five hits against Crandall in the bottom of the fifth, helping them close the gap to 5-2, but
Abi LaValley's two-run homer to right-center field in the sixth gave OC some cushion and Crandall limited Eastern New Mexico to only one hit over the final three innings.
Brown went 4 for 4 with four RBIs in the second game. She hit a two-run homer off Leger (9-12) – who also started the second game in the circle for the Greyhounds – in the third inning to put OC ahead 4-0. After Eastern New Mexico pulled within 4-1 in the bottom of the third, OC answered with a three-run fourth inning highlighted by a two-run single up the middle by Brown.
Anderson tripled to right field and scored on a sacrifice fly by
Kylie Janzen in the seventh for OC.
The Eagles have won five straight in their series against Eastern New Mexico and are 12-5 all-time against the Greyhounds, including a 4-0 mark in Portales.
