OKLAHOMA CITY (March 24, 2022) –
Brooklin Bain delivered a pair of clutch two-run singles and No. 23-ranked Oklahoma Christian rallied for five runs in its final time at bat to beat Southwest Baptist (Mo.) 9-7 on Thursday afternoon in a nonconference softball game at Tom Heath Field.
OC (20-8) extended its winning streak to six games, but Southwest Baptist (6-18) pushed the Eagles further than they probably expected. The Bearcats took advantage of a key error by OC to score five runs in the top of the sixth inning to go ahead 7-4. Abby Henson had the big blow for Southwest Baptist, a three-run double.
The Eagles responded with a big inning of their own.
Lindsey Stoeckel walked to lead off,
Chloe Woodward singled to left field and
Tristyn Hamilton reached on a dropped third strike, loading the bases with no outs. Bain then blooped a single into short right field to score pinch-runner
Kelsey Gammage and Woodward. An infield single by
Hannah Pate scored Hamilton to tie the game.
Bain came home on a fielder's-choice ground ball by
Whitney Walde, who eventually scored on a single to right-center field by
Abi LaValley off reliever Allissa Collette (0-4).
Southwest Baptist put its lead runner on in the top of the seventh inning, but
Kali Crandall retired the next three batters – the final two by strikeout – to earn her third save of the season. Stoeckel (4-0) recorded the final out of sixth inning and was the beneficiary of OC's rally. The Eagles used all four of their pitchers, with
Grace Anderson starting and Bain relieving her to start the fourth inning.
Walde doubled and scored during a two-run first inning for the Eagles. Margo Forssard homered to lead off the top of the second for Southwest Baptist. The Bearcats tied the game at 2-2 in the fourth thanks to another OC fielding error, but the Eagles regained the lead in the bottom of that inning on Bain's first two-run single to right field. Bain finished 3 for 4 to raise her season average to .424.
Pate also went 3 for 4 for OC while Walde, LaValley and Woodward added two hits each.
OC will return to Lone Star Conference play on Friday, hosting Midwestern State (Texas) in a 3 p.m. doubleheader, then will host LSC rival Texas Woman's on Sunday for a noon doubleheader.
