RICHARDSON, Texas (Feb. 8, 2022) – The Lone Star Conference on Tuesday named Oklahoma Christian pitcher
Isaiah Alvarenga as the NCAA Division II league's first pitcher of the week for the 2022 baseball season.
Alvarenga, a sophomore right-hander from Grapevine, Texas, made his OC debut on Saturday as the Eagles opened the campaign with a 10-0 win at St. Mary's (Texas) in San Antonio. He pitched seven shutout innings, allowing only three hits and two walks while striking out seven batters.
Alvarenga, last season's NCAA Division III West Co-West Region pitcher of the year at East Texas Baptist, didn't allow a St. Mary's baserunner past second base. By contrast, the Rattlers scored 16 and 18 runs against OC last season in games in the LSC tournament, ending the Eagles' campaign.
He's the first OC pitcher since April 2019, when
Gabe Rodery was named as the Heartland Conference's pitcher of the week, to win a weekly award from a conference.
