GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (Feb. 10, 2022) –
Brandon Heredia led a dominant Oklahoma Christian performance in the 200-yard freestyle on Thursday at the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships, posting the top time of the swimming season in NCAA Division II in the event.
Heredia led a group of four Eagles who all qualified for the final and met the Division II B time standard. One of them,
Victor Rosado, finished second behind Heredia and likely will join Heredia in the 200 freestyle at next month's Division II Championships in Greensboro, N.C.
OC swimmers also set school records and posted Division II B qualifying times in the 400 individual medley and 400 medley relay on the meet's second day. No. 17-ranked OC is a solid third in the four-team meet standings with 354 points, trailing meet host and No. 4 Colorado Mesa (597.5) and No. 21 Colorado School of Mines (450.5).
Heredia, a junior from Maryville, Mo., posted a time of 1:37.38 to win the 200 freestyle final, which, when adjusted for altitude, will be 1:36.18, .07 of a second better than the current top Division II time listed on the website collegeswimming.com, posted by Ruben Leeuwen of Lewis (Ill.).
Rosado, a freshman from St. Petersburg, Fla., was the runner-up in 1:38.69 and his altitude-adjusted time of 1:37.49 ranks 13th this season in Division II. Rosado already has posted an automatic national qualifying time in the 1,000 freestyle, so he's already guaranteed a trip to North Carolina.
Freshman
Caleb Musser of Overland Park, Kan., and freshman
Chase Fields of Tyler, Texas, finished sixth and seventh, respectively, meaning the Eagles comprised half the eight-man field in the event's A final. Musser's time was 1:41.03 (altitude adjusted to 1:39.83) while Fields finished in 1:41.34 (altitude adjusted to 1:40.14). Both also met the B time standard.
Heredia also anchored OC's 400 medley relay team that finished second in 3:14.50. The altitude-adjusted time of 3:14.10 was a school record, met the B time standard and ranks ninth in Division II this season. Joining Heredia on the squad were freshman
Dereck Montgomery, freshman
J.T. Amrein and Fields. The previous school record in the event was 3:17.32, set by Reese McIlory, Amrein,
Elijah Tung and Heredia in November at the Eagle Invitational in Edmond, Okla.
Another school record fell in the 400 individual medley, as
Andrew Ehler, a junior from Oak Point, Texas, finished fifth in 4:04.04, which met the B time standard. Ehler's altitude-adjusted time of 3:59.04 broke the former OC mark of 4:00.32, set by Bergen Davis at the 2020 RMAC meet. OC freshman
Jason Seitz of Glen Allen, Va., also qualified for the A final, finishing eighth in 4:22.48 (4:17.48 altitude-adjusted).
OC's top finisher in the 100 butterfly was sophomore
Elijah Tung of Columbia, S.C., who made the B final and placed 11th overall in 50.63 seconds (50.53 seconds altitude-adjusted).
On Friday, the meet's third day, swimmers will compete in the 500 freestyle, 100 backstroke, 100 breaststroke, 200 butterfly and the 800 freestyle relay. Preliminary races will begin at 10 a.m. Central (9 a.m. local) with finals to start at 6 p.m. Central (5 p.m. local).
