NANTUCKET, Mass. (Sept. 26, 2021) – Former Oklahoma Christian standout Preston Wilkins finished his first appearance in the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship on Sunday at Miacomet Golf Course.

It was a long day of golf for Wilkins, who was one of 124 players in the 264-man field who wasn't able to finish a scheduled Saturday qualifying round due to fog delays. He resumed his first round at Sankaty Head Golf Club in nearby Siasconset at 7 a.m. Eastern (6 a.m. Central) on Sunday, closing out a 5-over-par 75 before moving over to Miacomet, where he shot a 9-over-par 79.

With his two-round score of 154, Wilkins didn't make the cut to 64 players for match play, which will begin Monday at Sankaty Head. Even so, he had a few highlights, including three eagles on Sunday during his qualifying rounds.

During his roller-coaster round on the 6,645-yard Sankaty Head course, Wilkins started Saturday on No. 10 and was 8-over after his first 11 holes before a birdie on the par-3 No. 2. He later added an eagle on the par-5 No. 8 and another birdie on the par-4 No. 9 to finish with a 75.

At the 6,782-yard Miacomet course, he never gained much traction, with six bogeys, a triple bogey and a quadruple bogey. But he did have a pair of eagles, on the par-4 No. 11 and the par-5 No. 18.

Wilkins, who now lives in Bixby, Okla., qualified for the U.S. Mid-Amateur on Aug. 16 by shooting a course-record, bogey-free 61 (10-under-par) in a qualifier at MeadowBrook Golf Club in Tulsa, Okla.

Wilkins, who played at OC from 2008 to 2012, became the third OC alumnus to play in the U.S. Mid-Amateur, which is for amateur players who are at least 25 years old as of Saturday. He joined Danny Lovell (1999-2002) and Noah Lawson (2006-09) on that exclusive list.

A four-time NAIA All-American for the Eagles, Wilkins started on OC teams that won national titles in 2009 and 2011.
