OKLAHOMA CITY (July 16, 2021) – A campaign to raise funds to update Oklahoma Christian's baseball field with an artificial-turf infield has begun.
Dobson Field – named for one of the pillars of OC athletics, former athletic director, baseball coach and women's basketball coach Max Dobson – opened in 2008 when the university revived its baseball program. The current grass and dirt playing surface (particularly the infield) needs frequent maintenance and prep work both before and after practices and games.
"We are very excited about the prospect of getting the field turfed," OC coach
Lonny Cobble said. "It will be a huge recruiting tool for us and cut down on games not played because of rain."
Three current or former OC baseball coaches – Cobble, Chuck White and Johnny Inman – and Dobson's son, Todd, have joined the effort to help raise funds for the project, which will cost $300,000.
"Our athletes work so hard for not only us coaches and our team, but also for their professors in their studies," a letter signed by the four men said. "They balance very time-consuming schedules, and we want to give them the best conditions to train and play in. We want to keep our students here, practicing and playing under the legendary Dobson name! Turfing the Dobson infield will require significant resources, but we have the support of our amazing friends of OC Baseball."
As work for the project is set to begin in a few weeks, about $115,000 has been donated or pledged to the project so far and the current campaign's goal is to raise $100,000 more from OC baseball alumni and friends.
