Box Score OKLAHOMA CITY (March 19, 2021) – An error helped No. 10-ranked West Texas A&M tie the game and the Buffaloes jumped on Oklahoma Christian in the late innings for a 7-3 win on Friday night in the series opener between the baseball teams at Dobson Field.
OC (8-7, 7-6 Lone Star Conference), ranked 10th in the South Central Region, led one of NCAA Division II's top teams 3-2 after a three-run sixth inning, fueled by a RBI double by reigning regional hitter of the week
Chance Westervelt and a go-ahead, run-scoring single by
Errett Edwards.
OC's top pitcher, senior left-hander
Gabe Rodery, took that lead into the seventh and quickly retired two batters. But West Texas A&M (16-3, 13-2) then got an infield single by Jonah Gonzales, who stole second base before scoring on a fielding error, tying the game.
Facing OC reliever
Cody Johnson (0-2) in the eighth, the Buffaloes took the lead when Will Fuenning's triple to center field scored Ryan Johnson, who had drawn a leadoff walk. Izaiah Madrid drew another walk ahead of a two-run double by Cade Engel that made it 6-3.
Johnson's run-scoring double in the ninth added an insurance run for the Buffaloes.
Two West Texas A&M pitchers limited OC to five hits, with four of those coming in the sixth inning. Starter Mathieu Gauthier (5-2) earned the win, striking out six batters in seven innings, while Chris Rodriguez pitched two scoreless, hitless innings for the save.
The Eagles and Buffaloes will play again at 2 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday.
