Box Score AUSTIN, Texas (March 14, 2021) – Oklahoma Christian apparently is comfortable playing baseball away from home.
The Eagles recorded their fourth straight road win and clinched a series victory as well, riding the pitching of
Cole Lee and the hitting of
Chance Westervelt and
Michael DiFiore to an 8-3 win over St. Edward's (Texas) on Sunday afternoon at Lucian-Hamilton Field.
OC (7-5, 6-5 Lone Star Conference) will go for a rare road series sweep at traditionally strong St. Edward's (4-7, 4-7) on Monday at noon. While OC now has won consecutive road series against the Hilltoppers (having also won a three-game set in 2019), the Eagles never have swept a three-game series at St. Edward's.
Lee (1-0), a junior left-hander who just moved into OC's starting rotation last week, pitched a career-long seven innings and allowed the Hilltoppers only five hits and one run while striking out four batters without issuing a walk.
OC jumped on St. Edward's starter Jack Granack (2-1) for three runs in the first inning, with
Blake Empkey and
Coleton Hinkle delivering RBI singles on either side of a run-scoring triple by Westervelt.
DiFiore's two-run homer in the fifth extended OC's lead to 5-0. Chase Cos' RBI double in the sixth pulled St. Edward's within 5-1 but they came no closer against Lee.
Westervelt – who finished 3 for 3 and scored three runs – hit a solo home run to lead off the seventh inning and
Jaren Hill added a two-run double for insurance in the top of the ninth before the Hilltoppers scored twice in the bottom of the inning.
