EDMOND, Okla. (Nov. 12, 2021) – Not content with having posted the fastest time in NCAA Division II this season in the 200-yard individual medley, Oklahoma Christian freshman
J.T. Amrein did the same in the 100 breaststroke on Friday night in the Eagle Invitational.
His teammate
Brandon Heredia joined in the fun, too, doing the same in the 200 freestyle.
If the Division II swimming world didn't know about No. 18-ranked OC before this week's meet at the Mitch Park YMCA, it surely will now because of what Amrein and Heredia have accomplished. The duo was part of a group of Eagles who posted four Division II B national qualifying times and broke three school records on Friday, the meet's second day.
Heredia, a junior from Maryville, Mo., led a 1-2-3 OC finish in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:37.83. That was .02 faster than the previous fastest time in Division II this season, posted by Matheus LaPerriere Pimenta of OC's Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference rival, Colorado Mesa.
Second-place finisher
Caleb Musser, a freshman from Overland Park, Kan., just missed a B-cut time by .04 of a second, finishing in 1:40.33. OC freshman
Chase Fields of Tyler, Texas, took third in 1:40.85. Heredia's time broke his own school record of 1:37.98, set during the 2021 RMAC Championships in February.
Amazingly, that might not have been the Eagles' top performance of the night. Amrein, from Bonner Springs, Kan., rolled to a decisive win in the 100 breaststroke in a time of 53.08 seconds – just .17 off the Division II A (automatic) qualifying time and easily meeting the B standard.
It also was considerably faster than the currently listed season top time in the event on the website collegeswimming.com, which is 53.59 by Likith Prema of Indianapolis (Ind.). Amrein obliterated the former school record of 55.50 seconds, set by his current teammate, senior
Zac Hawes of Houston, in the 2020 RMAC meet.
Other Eagles who finished with NCAA B-cut times included sophomore
Elijah Tung of Columbia, S.C., who won the 100 butterfly in 49.04 seconds, and freshman
Dereck Montgomery of Rosenberg, Texas, who won the 100 backstroke in 49.80 seconds.
OC also posted a 1-2 finish in the grueling 400 individual medley, with freshman
Jason Seitz of Glen Allen, Va., winning in 4:01.43 and junior
Andrew Ehler of Oak Point, Texas, second in 4:03.41.
In addition to winning all five individual events, the Eagles also won both relays. The quartet of Montgomery, Amrein, Tung and Heredia took top honors in the 200 medley relay in 1:29.93 and in the 800 freestyle relay, Montgomery, Musser, Fields and Heredia won in a school-record time of 6:44.13. That was more than four seconds better than the former record of 6:48.33, set by Heredia,
Derek Duckworth, Gavin Lane and Hawes in the 2019 RMAC meet.
The final day of the meet will be Saturday, with preliminary races at 10 a.m. and the finals at 6:30 p.m. OC is competing with Texas-Permian Basin, Ouachita Baptist and Barton (Kan.) Community College in the meet.
