LIBERTY, Mo. (Jan. 22, 2021) –
Zac Hawes posted Oklahoma Christian's lone event win, but the Eagles set nine program records on Friday during a dual swimming meet on Friday afternoon at William Jewell (Mo.).
William Jewell won the dual at Kresge Pool 167-76, but Hawes prevented a sweep of the 13 events by the Cardinals with his win in the 50-meter breaststroke. The senior from Houston's time of 30.58 seconds broke the former OC mark of 31.83 seconds, set by
Bergen Davis in a dual meet last year against Oklahoma Baptist.
Hawes also set another record in the 100 individual medley, in which he finished second in 1:02.08.
He was one of five Eagles to post second-place event finishes, and four of them set an OC mark. The others were sophomore
Nathan Braun of Sycamore, Ill., in the 50 butterfly (26.84 seconds), senior
Noah Woollweever of Beckley, W.Va. in the 50 backstroke (27.53 seconds) and senior
Nathan Bruner of Cibolo, Texas in the 400 freestyle (4:15.39).
The Eagles' other second-place finisher was sophomore
Elijah Tung of Columbia, S.C., in the 100 butterfly (58.41 seconds).
Two third-place event finishers also established OC records – senior
Derek Duckworth of New Braunfels, Texas in the 50 freestyle (24.32 seconds) and junior
Brandon Heredia of Maryville, Mo., in the 200 freestyle (1:59.85). Heredia also placed third (behind Woollweever) in the 50 backstroke in 27.67 seconds.
Both of OC's relay teams set records while finishing second. In the 200 medley relay, the quartet of Woollweever, Hawes,
Ryan Jennings and Heredia posted a time of 1:46.74. In the 200 freestyle relay,
Jacob Nixon, Heredia, Jennings and Bruner finished in 1:36.78.
The Eagles will swim in another dual meet on Saturday at 1 p.m. at NCAA Division II power Drury (Mo.).
