OC men’s swimming team earns CSCAA academic honor

Micah Young and his OC men's swimming teammates posted the highest semester GPA in program history this past spring.
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (June 30, 2020) – For the second straight semester, Oklahoma Christian's men's swimming team has earned Scholar All-America status from the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America, the CSCAA announced Tuesday.

To make the list for the spring 2020 semester, a team had to post a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher for the semester and have 12 or more student-athletes.  OC's squad, coached by Josh Davis, posted a cumulative GPA of 3.611 – the highest in program history – during the semester and a 3.371 GPA for the 2019-20 academic year. In NCAA Division II, 50 teams qualified for the honor.

Thirteen of OC's 41 swimmers on the team posted a perfect 4.0 GPA for the spring semester. One of them, junior Andrew Assaleh, was named to the Academic All-America third-team list by the College Sports Information Directors of America and another, junior Micah Young, earned the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference's Summit Award, presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average who participates at the final site for each of the RMAC's championships.

Other team members for OC included Nathan Anderson, Silas Bazar, Nathan Braun, Caleb Brown, Eugene Brown, Nathan Bruner, Jimmy Burke, Noah Carter, Sam Carter, Griffen Cornell, Shai Cunningham, Bergen Davis, Grant Denison, Calvin Dexel, Derek Duckworth, Andrew Ehler, Ian Galindo, Tyler Godsey and Kurt Gscheidle.

Others on the team included Ethan Hansbury, Andrew Harris, Zac Hawes, Evan Heidenreich, Brandon Heredia, Brandon Hundley, Dylan Ingram, Carl Jackson, Ryan Jennings, Jackson Kaye, Gavin Lane, Davis Logan, Reese McIlroy, Simon Mooney, Jacob Nixon, Zachary Rodeffer, Carter Shelton, Elijah Tung, Luke Ward and Garrett White.

"No team was unaffected by this spring's pandemic, but athletic director (David) Lynn and President (John) deSteiguer can and should be proud of their team and the work of Josh," said Greg Earhart, the CSCAA's executive director.

Founded in 1922, the CSCAA – the first organization of college coaches in America – is a professional organization of college swimming and diving coaches dedicated to serving and providing leadership for the advancement of the sport of swimming and diving at the collegiate level.
