Hawes named as Eagle of the Week

OKLAHOMA CITY (Feb. 16, 2020) – A week in which he won an individual conference title and led Oklahoma Christian in earning team points earned swimmer Zac Hawes recognition Sunday as the Eagle of the Week.

Hawes, a junior from Houston, starred for the Eagles in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships, which ran from Wednesday through Saturday in Grand Junction, Colo. He won the 200-yard breaststroke with a school-record time of 2:01.45 that met the NCAA Division II B qualifying standard, beating the runner-up by more than two seconds.

Hawes also finished fourth in the 100 breaststroke in 55.60 seconds, a time that – when converted for altitude – also met the NCAA B standard. He qualified for B finals in both the 400 individual medley and 200 IM, winning the 400 IM race to place ninth overall in 4:09.22 and placing 13th overall in the 200 IM in 1:54.89.

He swam the breaststroke leg on OC's 200 medley and 400 medley relay teams that finished third (1:31.00) and second (3:20.18), respectively. He also posted a personal-best time of 1:45.87 in the 200 freestyle in a time trial.

The 48 team points Hawes earned was 14th-highest in the meet and helped the Eagles to a third-place finish, the highest in the program's three-season history. It marked the first time in those three seasons that OC finished ahead of in-state rival Oklahoma Baptist, long considered one of the nation's elite small-college programs.

The Eagle of the Week award recognizes the top performer in OC athletics for the previous week. The honor is presented each week at least one OC athletic team is in competition.
