Eagles dip again in regional baseball poll

Chase Berberich and the Eagles fell to No. 9 in this week's South Central Region poll.
GOLDEN, Colo. (April 22, 2019) – A 2-2 week that included its first Heartland Conference series loss of the season cost Oklahoma Christian in the South Central Region poll released Monday by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.

OC (27-14) dropped two spots to No. 9 in the poll, matching the Eagles' lowest ranking of the regular season. OC has been as high as No. 6 in the poll, appearing in it each week during the regular season after not appearing in the preseason poll. Three sports information directors from each of the region's three leagues – the Heartland, Lone Star and Rocky Mountain Athletic Conferences – vote in the poll.

OC beat Southwestern Oklahoma State 9-8 on Tuesday and opened its league series with Arkansas-Fort Smith with a 1-0 win on Thursday, but dropped the final two games to UAFS 8-3 and 7-4. The Eagles are third in the Heartland with a 9-6 conference record.

The top three teams in the poll remained unchanged. Angelo State (Texas) (38-7) topped the poll with seven first-place votes and 88 points, while Colorado Mesa (34-8) received two first-place votes and 79 points. West Texas A&M (36-8) was third with 73 points, with Colorado Mines (29-10) up a spot to fourth with 61 points. Lubbock Christian (Texas) (30-11) fell a spot to fifth with 56 points.

Despite a 1-3 week, Metro State (Colo.) (26-14) held at No. 6 with 34 points. Rogers State (27-13), a team OC is 2-0 against this season, moved up three spots to No. 7 with 30 points. Dixie State (Utah) (28-14) moved up a spot to eighth with 29 points, with OC receiving 27 points. Texas A&M-Kingsville fell two spots to 10th with seven points.

OC will play its final home game on Wednesday against nonconference foe Washburn (Kan.), then will head south to San Antonio for a three-game conference series at St. Mary's (Texas), to be played Friday and Saturday.
