GOLDEN, Colo. (April 15, 2019) – After posting four road wins last week, Oklahoma Christian jumped two spots to No. 7 in the South Central Region poll released Monday by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.
The Eagles had dropped three spots to No. 9 in last week's poll, but they won 21-17 at Oklahoma Baptist on Tuesday and lost 8-4 at home to Central Oklahoma before sweeping Newman (Kan.) in a weekend series in Wichita, winning 9-4, 9-8 and 15-4. The sweep put OC at 25-12 overall and in a tie for second place in the Heartland Conference with Rogers State at 8-4.
After not appearing in the South Central Region preseason poll, the Eagles have been ranked in every regular-season poll in 2019, spending all but two weeks at either No. 6 or No. 7. Three sports information directors from each of the region's three leagues – the Heartland, Lone Star and Rocky Mountain Athletic Conferences – vote in the poll.
The top four in the poll remained unchanged. Angelo State (Texas) (34-7) was No. 1, with six first-place votes and 86 points, followed by Colorado Mesa (31-7) with two first-place votes and 80 points. West Texas A&M (32-8) had 70 points and Lubbock Christian (Texas) (29-9) was fourth with 63 points and a first-place vote.
Colorado Mines (26-9) moved up a spot to No. 5 with 53 points, swapping with Metro State (Colo.) (25-11) in sixth with 42 points. OC received 37 points, followed by Texas A&M-Kingsville (25-14), which dropped a spot to No. 8 with 27 points. Dixie State (Utah) (25-13) fell a spot to No. 9 with 23 points and Rogers State (24-12) held at No. 10 with 12 points.
OC will host Southwestern Oklahoma State on Tuesday at 5 p.m. in a nonconference game before hosting Arkansas-Fort Smith for a Heartland series on Thursday and Friday. OC and UAFS (19-15) will play a doubleheader at 4 p.m. Thursday and a single game at 1 p.m. Friday. The Eagles and Lions split a nonconference doubleheader earlier this season.
