COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (March 7, 2019) – Andrew Assaleh and Kurt Gscheidle became the first two Oklahoma Christian men's swimmers ever to make the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference All-Academic first-team list, which was announced Thursday.
Eight other OC swimmers made the All-Academic team's Honor Roll. To qualify for the honor, an athlete must have at least a 3.3 cumulative grade-point average, have been a student at his institution for at least two semesters and used a season of competition during the academic year in which the award is earned.
Sports information directors from RMAC institutions vote to determine the first-team list, with the award based on both academic and athletic results.
Assaleh, a sophomore accounting major from Oklahoma City, carries a perfect 4.0 GPA. At the RMAC Championships in Lewisville, Texas, last month, he qualified for B finals in the 400-yard individual medley, the 100 breaststroke and the 200 breaststroke.
Gscheidle, a sophomore mechanical engineering major from Lantana, Texas, has a 3.87 GPA. He made the RMAC A final in the 100 butterfly and B finals in the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle, while also swimming on the Eagles' 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay teams. He holds eight OC program records.
Joining them from OC on the All-Academic list were Griffen Cornell, a sophomore electrical engineering major from San Antonio; Grant Denison, a sophomore marketing/management major from Oklahoma City; Derek Duckworth, a sophomore mechanical engineering major from New Braunfels, Texas; and Zac Hawes, a sophomore accounting/finance major from Houston.
Also on the list were Ryan Jennings, a sophomore computer science major from Keller, Texas; Carter Shelton, a sophomore sports management major from Jackson, Tenn.; Ruger Stocking, a sophomore Bible major from Whitehouse, Texas; and Micah Young, a sophomore mechanical engineering major from Olympia, Wash.
