Eagles drop a spot in regional baseball poll

Payton Hooper and the Eagles are at No. 7 in this week's South Central Region baseball poll.
GOLDEN, Colo. (March 25, 2019) – A 3-2 week that included a series win at a traditional Heartland Conference power wasn't enough to keep Oklahoma Christian from slipping a spot in this week's South Central Region poll.

OC fell to No. 7 in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association poll of nine sports information directors, three from each of the leagues – Heartland, Lone Star and Rocky Mountain Athletic Conferences – that make up the region.

The Eagles (17-7) split a doubleheader with Central Region power Emporia State (Kan.) on Tuesday, falling 6-3 and winning 18-15, before taking two of three games at St. Edward's (Texas), losing 3-2 in 10 innings before posting 9-7 and 8-6 wins. It was OC's first-ever series win at St. Edward's.

The Eagles weren't listed in the preseason region poll but debuted at No. 7 five weeks ago, then dropped to ninth before moving to No. 6, where they spent three weeks before dropping to No. 7 this week.

Despite a 2-2 week, Colorado Mesa (22-4) remained a unanimous No. 1 in the poll, receiving 90 points. Angelo State (Texas) (23-5) moved up two spots to No. 2 with 71 points while West Texas A&M (22-6) fell a spot to No. 3, with 70 points, after losing three of four games against Texas A&M-Kingsville. Dixie State (Utah) (20-6) also fell a spot to fourth, with 58 points, after splitting a four-game series against New Mexico Highlands.

Lubbock Christian (Texas) had 54 points and the Chaparrals (19-8) moved up two spots to fifth. Texas A&M-Kingsville (19-9), which beat OC in a single game earlier this season, jumped two spots to sixth with 42 points. OC had 31 points, followed by Colorado Mines (15-8) with 27 points, Metro State (Colo.) (15-8) with 17 points and St. Mary's (Texas) (19-10) with 15 points.

OC will visit local rival Central Oklahoma for a 6 p.m. game Tuesday before hosting Texas A&M International for a three-game Heartland series starting Friday.
