TAMPA, Fla. (Feb. 4, 2019) –
Cale Coshow is headed back to spring training with the New York Yankees.
The former Oklahoma Christian baseball standout was one of 21 players selected to attend the Yankees' camp as a non-roster invitee for the second straight year.
The non-roster invitees will join players on the team's 40-man roster at spring training in central Florida. Pitchers and catchers are due to report on Feb. 13, with the first workout scheduled for Feb. 14. The Yankees' first spring training game will be Feb. 23 vs. the Boston Red Sox.
During the offseason, Coshow often has returned to OC to work out and during one of those visits last month, he said he thought he'd again be a non-roster invitee after spending the 2018 season with the Yankees' Triple-A affiliate, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
The 6-foot-5, 270-pound right-hander went 1-4 with five saves and a 4.95 ERA last season. He had 66 strikeouts and 30 walks for the RailRiders in 56 1/3 innings.
Coshow, 26, is entering his seventh season in the Yankees' minor-league system, steadily climbing from rookie ball to Triple-A, one step from the major leagues. He reached Triple-A near the end of the 2017 season after spending the better part of two seasons at Double-A Trenton. He is the first former OC player to reach the Double-A or Triple-A levels.
Coshow went 2-0 as a freshman at Oklahoma in 2012 before transferring to OC. In 2013, he was one of OC's top starters and went 3-5 with a 4.56 ERA, helping the Eagles win the National Christian College Athletic Association Central Region title and qualify for the NCCAA World Series.
In 13 appearances (all starts) for the Eagles, he pitched 73 innings, with 69 strikeouts, 28 walks and two complete games.
Coshow signed with the Yankees in June 2013 for $100,000 after New York chose him in the 13th round of the MLB draft.
