COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Feb. 21, 2019) – Eight Oklahoma Christian swimmers made the All-Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference honor teams announced Thursday, including four who became the second-year program's first individual first-team honorees.
To make the first-team list, swimmers or relay teams had to finish in the top two in an event at the RMAC Championships, held last week in Lewisville, Texas. Second-team recognition went to swimmers and relay teams who finished third or fourth.
Bergen Davis, a freshman from Juneau, Alaska, led OC's slate of All-RMAC swimmers. Davis earned first-team recognition in the 200-yard backstroke and the 400 individual medley and second-team recognition in the 100 backstroke. He also was named as the RMAC freshman of the year, the first OC swimmer ever to earn an individual conference honor.
Earning honors in two individual events was
Noah Woollweever, a sophomore from Beckley, W.Va., who was a first-team selection in the 100 backstroke and a second-team selection in the 200 backstroke, as well as in two relay events.
Also on the first-team individual list from OC were
Brandon Heredia, a freshman from Maryville, Mo. (who became OC's first-ever conference champion, winning the 100 freestyle) and
Zac Hawes (200 breaststroke). The second-team individual list included
Derek Duckworth, a sophomore from New Braunfels, Texas.
Four OC relay teams made the All-RMAC teams. On the first-team list, after a runner-up finish at the RMAC meet, was the 800 freestyle relay team of Heredia, Duckworth,
Gavin Lane (a freshman from Clovis, Calif.) and Hawes.
OC relay teams earning second-team honors were from the 200 medley relay (Woollweever, Hawes,
Kurt Gscheidle and Duckworth), 200 freestyle relay (Duckworth, Heredia, Gscheidle and
Griffen Cornell) and 400 medley relay (Woollweever, Hawes, Gscheidle and Heredia). Gscheidle is a sophomore from Lantana, Texas, while Cornell is a sophomore from San Antonio.
Last year, OC had no individuals and only one relay team that made the All-RMAC list.
"Our success this season was a great team effort by the coaches and swimmers," OC head coach
Josh Davis said. "Our assistant coaches, Nathan Townsend and
Noah Yanchulis, were huge in taking us to the next level and the commitment, trust and hard work of the swimmers really paid off.
"These All-Conference swimmers have overcome a lot of obstacles to be some of the best. I'm super proud of them. It's really satisfying to see the culture and depth of our team progress so rapidly."
