LEWISVILLE, Texas (Feb.15, 2019) –
Noah Woollweever and the 800-yard freestyle relay team brought home silver medals for Oklahoma Christian and five more school records fell on the third day of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships at the Lewisville Westside Aquatic Center.
Woollweever, a sophomore from Beckley, W.Va., led a strong OC showing in the 100-yard backstroke, making the A final for a second straight year and placing second in 48.81 seconds, behind only Robinson Molina of Oklahoma Baptist (47.71 seconds).
OC freshman
Bergen Davis of Juneau, Alaska, also made the A final and was fourth in 50.01 seconds. Qualifying for the B final were freshman
David Logan of Norman (12th in 53.12 seconds) and sophomore
Carter Shelton of Jackson, Tenn. (15th in 54.18 seconds).
The Eagles' quartet of
Brandon Heredia,
Derek Duckworth,
Gavin Lane and
Zac Hawes nearly sprung what would have been a monumental upset in the 800 freestyle relay. Heredia, a freshman from Maryville, Mo., started in sizzling fashion, swimming the opening leg in 1:39.13 – setting an OC school record for 200 yards and meeting the NCAA Division II B time standard.
That put the Eagles ahead and Duckworth, a sophomore from New Braunfels, Texas, kept them there. Colorado Mesa caught the Eagles on the third leg, though, and held off OC on the final leg to win in 6:40.09. The Eagles finished ahead of Colorado Mines and perennial power Oklahoma Baptist, though, with a time of 6:48.33. That shattered OC's former record of 7:17.12, set by
Caleb Brown,
Micah Young,
Jimmy Burke and
Daniel Rutledge at last year's RMAC meet.
Hawes, a sophomore from Houston, made the A final in the 100 breaststroke and finished fifth in 56.05 seconds. In the preliminary round, he swam a time of 55.86 seconds to break his own OC mark of 57.89 seconds, set earlier this season at the Tiger Invitational in San Antonio. Also in the 100 breaststroke, sophomore
Andrew Assaleh of Oklahoma City reached the B final and placed 14th overall in 1:00.11.
OC had three finalists in the 500 freestyle. Freshman
Andrew Ehler of Oak Point, Texas, made the A final and finished eighth in 4:41.93, after setting a school record in the prelims with a time of 4:39.61. The program's former mark was 4:49.22, set by Davis at the Tiger Invitational.
Making the 500 freestyle B final were sophomore
Caleb Brown of New Braunfels, Texas (13th in 4:47.26) and sophomore
Jimmy Burke of Deer Park, Texas (15th in 4:49.96).
In the 200 butterfly, OC's two B finalists were freshman
Jackson Kaye of Cypress, Texas (12th in 1:55.47) and sophomore
Ryan Jennings of Keller, Texas (13th in 1:56.46).
Sophomore
Griffen Cornell of San Antonio swam the 100 individual medley – an exhibition race – in the prelims and won in 53.38 seconds, but did not race in the final.
OC was fourth in the four-team event with 439.5 points, trailing Colorado Mesa (1,000.5), Oklahoma Baptist (730) and Colorado Mines (569).
On Saturday, the meet's final day, swimmers will compete in the 1,650 freestyle, 100 freestyle, 200 backstroke, 200 breaststroke and 400 freestyle relay.
