Editor's note: One of a series of stories looking back at OC athletic highlights in 2019.
OKLAHOMA CITY (Dec. 22, 2019) – In just its second season of competition, Oklahoma Christian's men's swimming program was looking for a breakout performer in the ultra-competitive Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships. Freshman
Bergen Davis stepped up.
Davis earned RMAC freshman of the year honors, becoming the Eagles' first individual conference award winner and ranking as the No. 10 story in OC athletics for 2019.
Davis, from Juneau, Alaska, quickly established himself as one of OC's top swimmers during the regular season, then shined even brighter at the conference meet, held Feb. 13-16 in Lewisville, Texas.
He tied for fourth individually in the meet by earning 63 team points, qualifying for A finals in the 400-yard individual medley, the 200 IM, the 100 backstroke and the 200 backstroke and finishing second, fifth, fourth and second, respectively. He set school records in all but the 100 backstroke and met the NCAA B qualifying standard in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:47.85.
Those performances earned Davis All-RMAC first-team honors in the 200 backstroke and 400 IM and second-team honors in the 100 backstroke.
His 200 backstroke time at the RMAC meet also made Davis the first OC swimmer ever to qualify for the prestigious Toyota U.S. Open, and he finished 60th in the event at the national meet on Dec. 7 in Atlanta.
