Box Score 2 OKLAHOMA CITY (May 4, 2018) – A pair of big innings late in each baseball game propelled Rogers State to a doubleheader sweep of Oklahoma Christian at Dobson Field on Friday.
A six-run sixth-inning outburst lifted the Hillcats a 10-3 win in the opener of the four-game Heartland Conference series and Rogers State rallied with three runs in the seventh inning before holding off the Eagles 7-6 in the second game.
Both OC (21-26, 10-16 Heartland) and Rogers State (25-23, 11-15) already had been eliminated from the race for a Heartland Conference tournament berth before the series started. OC's chances ended on Thursday, when Lubbock Christian (Texas) swept a doubleheader against Arkansas-Fort Smith.
The Hillcats used a three-run fourth inning – highlighted by Garrett Hall's RBI single and a two-run double by Sam Casinell – to take a 4-1 lead in the opener. In the sixth, Bradley Degnan hit a two-run homer off OC starter
Connor Litterell (2-3) and Grant Farris later hit a three-run shot off reliever
Luke Reynolds. Litterell recorded six strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings.
Rogers State starter Tim Luce (4-8) pitched a complete game, allowing eight hits. Two of OC's runs scored on a triple to right-center field by
Kyle Bottger in the final inning of the seven-inning game.
OC left 12 runners on base in the second game, leaving the Eagles vulnerable when Rogers State rallied late.
Kolton Brown hit a solo home run in the second for OC and after the Hillcats tied the game in the top of the third,
Chad Kennedy hit a two-run, two-out double in the bottom of the inning to put OC back ahead 3-1. Bottger's RBI single scored
Drew Wright in the fourth to make it 4-1.
The Hillcats tied the game in the fifth with three runs, two on a single to right field by Zack Mann. OC edged back ahead in the bottom of the inning when Wright drew a bases-loaded walk with two out, but managed nothing else.
Rogers State took the lead in the seventh against reliever
Michael Basler (1-2), with Mann's two-run triple keying a three-run inning that put the Hillcats up 7-5.
OC had a golden opportunity in the bottom of the ninth against Rogers State closer Brock Knoten.
Austin Stokes singled to left field to lead off and
Chad Kennedy followed with a sinking line drive that Rogers State center fielder Brooks Douglass dove for but missed, resulting in a double that allowed Stokes to score.
Knoten hit
Callen Crockett with a pitch and
Slater Springman delivered a perfect sacrifice bunt with two strikes, putting baserunners on second and third, but Knoten struck out
Garrett Wages and coaxed a groundout from
Brice Smith to end the game and record his fifth save.
Rogers State reliever Joey Lucas (1-1) earned the pitching win.
The Eagles and Hillcats will play a season-ending doubleheader on Saturday, starting at noon.
