Rodery, Suhr pitch Eagles to sweep at TAMIU, series win

Sophomore Gabe Rodery threw a four-hit shutout at TAMIU on Saturday.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LAREDO, Texas (April 7, 2018) – Gabe Rodery and Robbie Suhr turned in a pair of outstanding pitching performances Saturday afternoon, lifting Oklahoma Christian to a doubleheader sweep at Texas A&M International.

Rodery tossed a four-hit shutout as OC took the opener at Jorge Haynes Field by a 4-0 count and Suhr allowed only one run in eight innings to lead the Eagles to a 6-1 win in the finale of the four-game baseball series.

By taking three of those four games, OC (15-16, 6-6 Heartland Conference) moved into fourth place in the league standings – just one game out of third and two games out of second – and the Eagles will play three of their final four conference series at home. TAMIU (12-21, 4-8) dropped into last in the eight-team race.

Suddenly, the Eagles have won five of their last six games heading into a Tuesday contest at local archrival Southern Nazarene.

Rodery (3-2), a sophomore left-hander from Verdigris, threw his second complete game of the season, striking out six batters and retiring 11 straight in one stretch. The Dustdevils managed only one hit through five innings and never advanced a runner past second base.

OC scored all its runs in the fourth inning off TAMIU starter Hugo Mendiola (2-4). Kolton Brown's double to left-center field scored Chad Kennedy, who had reached on a leadoff single, and later scored on a bunt single by Callen Crockett. Hunter Markwardt's double to left-center brought home two more runs.

Suhr (4-2), a freshman right-hander from Lee's Summit, Mo., picked up where Rodery left off, scattering seven hits while striking out four. The Dustdevils' only run of the day came in the third, when Adrian Castillo hit a one-out double down the left-field line before scoring on a two-out single by Abel Aguilar.

But that only pulled TAMIU within 2-1, as the Eagles scored twice in the top of the third off Erick Garay (0-3), with Jake Collins and Ryan Ward delivering RBI singles, Ward's coming on a one-out bunt.

OC extended its lead to 4-1 in the fourth, taking advantage of a passed ball and an error, and made it 6-1 in the sixth with a two-run rally keyed by a RBI triple by Kyle Bottger.

Markwardt, Garrett Wages and Crockett each had a pair of hits for OC.

After the nonconference game at SNU on Tuesday, OC will host Newman (Kan.) for a four-game Heartland series next Friday and Saturday.
