Box Score 2 WICHITA, Kan. (March 9, 2018) – Two home runs provided the majority of Oklahoma Christian's offense on Friday at Newman (Kan.) and also gave the Eagles a doubleheader split.
A two-run homer by
Kolton Brown in the second inning and a three-run shot by
Brice Smith in the fourth lifted OC to a 5-4 win in the opener at McCarthy Field, but the Jets rallied for a 13-4 win in the second game.
OC (6-6) is playing Heartland Conference rival Newman (6-10) in a four-game baseball series mandated by the league, although it won't count in the conference standings. The teams will play another four-game series in Oklahoma City later this season that will count in the standings.
In the opener, Brown's homer in the second off Newman starter Zach Erdman (2-2) came after
Jake Collins had doubled, and the Eagles had a pair of runners on before Smith's longball made it 5-0.
Newman rallied with a run in the bottom of the fourth, then got to OC starter
Mason McAlister (2-2) in the bottom of the sixth for three runs, with Brian Canfield and Channing Williams delivering RBI singles. But Collins came on in the seventh and allowed only one hit while blanking the Jets and recording his third save of the season.
The Jets jumped on OC starter
Gabe Rodery (1-1) for nine hits and eight runs (six earned) in the first two innings of the second game and cruised from there. Collins hit a two-run double during a three-run fourth inning that pulled the Eagles within 11-4, but OC managed only four hits the rest of the way.
Roger Wilson (2-1) picked up the win for Newman, pitching seven innings and allowing four hits and four runs.
The teams will play another doubleheader Saturday, starting at noon.
