Box Score 2 LUBBOCK, Texas (March 23, 2018) – No. 14-ranked Lubbock Christian (Texas) rolled up 33 hits while posting a doubleheader sweep of Oklahoma Christian on Friday, winning 10-3 and 17-12 as both teams opened their Heartland Conference baseball schedules.
Oklahoma Christian (9-12, 0-2 Heartland) had 26 hits of its own in the doubleheader, but two big innings by Lubbock Christian – one in each game – proved to be the Eagles' undoing. Lubbock Christian (17-7, 2-0) posted a seven-run second inning in the first game and a nine-run fifth inning in the second game.
OC took an early 1-0 lead in the opener on a home run by
Brice Smith – he went 3-for 3 in the game and 7-for-9 in the doubleheader – before the Chaparrals' second-inning explosion, which was highlighted by a three-run homer by Andrew Pratt off OC starter
Mason McAlister (2-4).
The Eagles pulled within 7-3 before Lubbock Christian put away the seven-inning game with three runs in the fifth. Lubbock Christian starter Ricky Contreras (4-1) went the distance to pick up the pitching win.
OC scored in seven of its nine at-bats in the second game and had 19 hits, including seven for extra bases, but couldn't match the Chaparrals' offensive fireworks. Both teams' bullpens were taxed – Lubbock Christian used eight pitchers, the Eagles six.
The Eagles led 2-0 before Lubbock Christian scored five runs in the bottom of the third. OC tied the game in the top of the fifth on
Kyle Bottger's solo home run and went ahead 6-5 later in the inning when
Drew Wright's sacrifice fly scored
Slater Springman.
But the bottom of the inning was a nightmare for OC, as the Chaparrals scored seven of their nine runs before the Eagles recorded an out. The big blow was a grand slam by Braden Hayward off OC starter
Gabe Rodery (1-2). Andres Negron then greeted reliever
Matthew Fusselman with a solo home run.
But trailing 14-6, the Eagles scored the next six runs, pulling within 14-12 in the eighth when
Callen Crockett tripled to lead off the eighth and scored on a single by
Luke Reynolds. But Lubbock Christian reliever Chandler Casey and allowed the Eagles only one hit the rest of the way to pick up his first save of the season.
Lubbock Christian sealed the win with three runs in the eighth inning. Shandon Herrera (1-0), the third of the Chaparrals' pitchers, was credited with the win.
The teams will finish their four-game series on Saturday with a doubleheader starting at noon.
