After loss at Rogers State, Eagles must sit and wait

Senior catcher Lane Paul had one of OC's six hits on Monday at Rogers State.
Box Score CLAREMORE, Okla. (May 1, 2017) – Oklahoma Christian's perilous potential postseason hopes became even more so on Monday afternoon at the Diamond Sports Complex.

OC closed the regular season with a 15-3 loss to Rogers State, a result that damaged the Eagles' bid to qualify for the four-team field for the Heartland Conference postseason baseball tournament.

OC (28-21, 13-11 Heartland) did win its series at Rogers State (31-16, 11-10) and is – for now – in fourth place in the league standings, a game ahead of RSU and St. Edward's (Texas). But while OC has no more conference games to play, Rogers State and St. Edward's each could improve their standing.

Rogers State could pass OC if the Hillcats can sweep league co-leader Lubbock Christian (Texas) next week, while St. Edward's needs only to win two of three at home against last-place Oklahoma Panhandle State to forge a tie with OC, which would be good enough for the Hilltoppers to claim the fourth spot via a tiebreaker.

OC struggled from the get-go on Monday against the Hillcats, who had five hits and scored three runs in the first inning against the Eagles' freshman left-hander, Gabe Rodery (3-2).

The Eagles had only six hits the entire game, but did rally within 4-2 in the top of the fourth inning thanks to a two-run home run by senior Kolton Brown, his team-high eighth longball of the season. But Rogers State took advantage of four OC errors in a disastrous bottom of the fourth for the Eagles, during which they gave up nine runs.

The game was called after seven innings due to the 10-run rule. Rogers State starter Landon Nealon (5-0) went six innings on the mound to pick up the win.
