Box Score OKLAHOMA CITY (April 22, 2017) – It doesn't happen often, but Oklahoma Christian's offense fired nothing but blanks on Saturday night against Arkansas-Fort Smith at Dobson Field.
Two UAFS pitchers combined on a seven-hit shutout to lead the Lions to a 4-0 win over OC in the first game of a crucial Heartland Conference baseball series.
It was only the second time this season OC (24-19, 10-9 Heartland) had been shut out – the last time was way back on Feb. 4, by Southern Arkansas – and the first time the Eagles had gone scoreless at home since April 18, 2015, in an 8-0 loss to St. Mary's (Texas).
"That was frustrating," OC coach
Lonny Cobble said. "We just could not get anything going at all."
The game shaped up as a battle of aces, with Hayden Harvey of UAFS facing OC senior
Dalton Rentz. Harvey (6-4) mostly cruised through seven innings, not allowing a hit or a baserunner until the fourth inning. OC didn't advance a runner to third base against Harvey, who had six strikeouts.
Rentz (8-3) had seven strikeouts in seven innings, but ran into trouble twice. UAFS (24-15, 12-4) scored three runs in the third, two on a single to left field by Dion Williams.
The Lions picked up the third run in bizarre fashion after Rentz picked Anthony Seminaris off first base. During the rundown, OC shortstop
Garrett Wages tagged Seminaris for the third out of the inning before Williams – who had been on third base – crossed home plate, but umpires awarded the Lions the run.
Williams doubled and scored on a double by Seminaris in the fifth to put UAFS up 4-0.
OC's best scoring chance came in the eighth, when the Eagles loaded the bases with two outs against UAFS reliever Clayton Whelchel, but Whelchel rebounded to strike out
Kolton Brown to end the inning.
The teams will finish the series with a doubleheader on Sunday, starting at noon.
