Box Score 2 OKLAHOMA CITY (March 4, 2017) – It really didn't matter who was pitching for Oklahoma Christian during its three-game series against Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.) – strikeouts were the order of the day.
A day after recording 12 strikeouts against the Crimson Wave, OC pitchers struck out 15 and 17 batters during a doubleheader sweep on a chilly, windy Saturday afternoon at Dobson Field. The Eagles' hitters did their job, too, as evidenced by the final scores – 13-2 in the opener, 20-0 in the second game.
OC (11-8) posted its first series sweep of the baseball season, which coach
Lonny Cobble hopes will give the Eagles momentum as they head into the start of Heartland Conference play next Friday and Saturday against Lubbock Christian (Texas).
"We hit the ball well and lots of guys got a chance to play and experience success, and that's always good," Cobble said. "Our pitchers also threw well and we got some guys some innings before we head into conference play. It's always good to win."
In the first game, OC needed only eight hits to score its 13 runs. The Eagles jumped on Calumet St. Joseph starter John Wilson (1-2) for six runs in the first, with
Garrett Wages' double to left-center field the key blow.
OC added six more in the third inning, as Baxter hit a solo home run that banged off the scoreboard behind the left-field wall and
Chad Kennedy followed with a grand slam, also over the left-field wall – which was a target for batters, with a 20 mph south wind helping carry the ball that direction.
Sophomore left-hander
Michael Basler (1-0) earned his first career pitching start and struck out nine batters while allowing seven hits and two runs in four innings.
Zachary Pape,
Garett Hill and
Jake Moore each pitched a shutout inning to finish the game for the Eagles.
The only big highlight for Calumet St. Joseph (3-17) was a solo home run in the fourth inning by Devin Bafia.
OC was more dominant in the second game, posting single-game season highs by a Heartland team for runs (20), hits (21) and strikeouts by an opponent (17). The Eagles scored in all six of their at-bats, highlighted by a 10-run third-inning outburst. Every OC starter had at least one RBI and all but one had a hit.
Logan Gipson led the Eagles, going 4-for-5 with a triple and three RBIs.
Ryan Ward and
Jared Price also had three RBIs, with Price hitting his first collegiate home run, a two-run shot in the third inning.
The 20 runs were the most scored by the Eagles in a game since May 6, 2014, when they beat Crowley's Ridge (Ark.) 23-7 on their way to the National Christian College Athletic Association Central Region title.
Right-hander
Mason McAlister (1-2) fanned 12 batters in five innings for the Eagles, while
Hunter Raley had three and
Abe Spencer two, each in one inning of work. Calumet St. Joseph starter Trystyn Schoonover (0-2) took the pitching loss.
