Box Score OKLAHOMA CITY (Sept. 29, 2016) – For most of the 110 minutes of action between Oklahoma Christian and St. Mary's (Texas) on Thursday night, the Eagles controlled the game and had the better scoring opportunities, as evidenced by a 23-9 advantage in shots.
But they weren't able to capitalize on any of their chances and left the Eagle Soccer Field with a 0-0 result, only the fourth scoreless draw in coach
David Scott's 11 seasons at the OC helm. The tie did snap a five-game losing streak for OC (2-6-1, 0-4-1 Heartland Conference) and gave the Eagles their first standings point in the league race.
The stars of the game proved to be the two goalkeepers,
Evan Helker for OC and Jack Moore for St. Mary's. Helker made only five saves while recording his 10th career shutout, but also helped limit the shooting opportunities presented by numerous long flip throw-ins by the Rattlers' Michael Lewis.
Moore had eight saves, perhaps the most important in the 25th minute, when he deflected a strong shot by OC's
Cody McLemore off the crossbar and out of bounds. Moore also denied OC's
Cody Cook on three shots in the final nine minutes of regulation, and then got lucky when Cook's sizzling shot from about 18 yards sailed just wide of the goal in the 89th minute.
The Eagles thought they had the game-winner in the closing seconds of regulation, but an offside call against them negated the goal.
Neither team generated much offense in the two 10-minute overtime periods, as the Eagles took only three shots and the Rattlers (2-4-2, 1-3-1) had only two.
OC will be back in action on Saturday at 2:30 p.m., when the Eagles host league rival Texas A&M International (3-5, 2-3).
