Box Score WICHITA, Kan. (Sept. 22, 2016) – Surrendering a goal in the opening seconds often forces a soccer team to have to fight a seemingly uphill battle all the way, and that's the predicament in which Oklahoma Christian found itself on Thursday night at Newman (Kan.).
After Newman scored just 56 seconds into the game, OC managed to equalize in the second half, but the Jets walked away from Wilkins Field as 2-1 winners thanks to a late goal by Ed Jabbari.
OC (2-5, 0-3 Heartland Conference) had trouble generating offensive chances, finishing with eight shots to 16 for Newman (4-2-1, 2-0-1). The Jets compounded the problem for OC with the early goal, on which Jabbari crossed the ball in to Tommy Fiszel, who beat an OC defender on the goal line.
Senior
Cody Cook tied the game for OC in the 53rd minute, as his free kick from the far right wing deflected off both a Newman defender and goalkeeper Calum Dillon and into the goal.
But in the 71st minute, Jabbari won a loose ball and took advantage of an open shot, beating OC goalkeeper
Evan Helker to put the Jets up 2-1.
OC managed only one corner kick and no shots the rest of the way.
Helker finished with five saves for the Eagles, while Dillon had four for Newman.
The Eagles will be back on the road on Saturday, facing Rogers State at 2:30 p.m.
