Box Score SHAWNEE, Okla. (Sept. 1, 2016) – A promising first half for Oklahoma Christian in its men's soccer season opener turned into a nightmare by the time the game ended Thursday night at Oklahoma Baptist.
OBU scored three unanswered goals after halftime to rally for a 4-2 win over the visiting Eagles. It was only the third win for OBU in 11 games all-time against OC and the Bison's first victory in the series since 2008.
OC junior forward
Anthony Buchanan, returning after missing most of the 2015 season due to injury, had a goal and an assist for the Eagles (0-1), but OC proved ineffective in getting the ball forward after taking a 2-1 halftime lead.
OBU outshot the Eagles 18-10 and the Bison had a decided advantage in that statistical category after halftime, recording nine shots to OC's three.
"I don't know what it was," OC coach
David Scott said. "We just lost our willingness to battle. The first 10 to 15 minutes of the second half we looked OK, and then we just fell apart. In the first half, we came out and we battled and we did the things we did a year ago. The second half, we just came out on the field and were here. We didn't grind and fight."
Buchanan put the Eagles up in the 12th minute, taking a cross from the left side from
Ante Susic and beating OBU goalkeeper Collin Spencer from about six yards out. But in the 19th minute, the Eagles gave away that lead with an own goal, as a cross by OBU's Vincente Castillo deflected into the net off an OC defender.
Buchanan played a role in the Eagles' second goal, in the 41st minute. Susic's pass down the left side of the field found Buchanan, who juked Spencer and crossed the ball to the center of the penalty box.
Seth Brown collected it there and scored easily, with Spencer out of position.
Castillo tied the game in the 56th minute, converting a breakaway off a pass from Jacob Tunney. Castillo put the Bison ahead in the 69th minute, taking a long throw-in from Jonathan Martinez and shooting hard and low under OC goalkeeper
Evan Helker.
Taylor Vanderford had OC's best second-half scoring chance, but Spencer stopped his free kick from just outside the penalty box in the 77th minute. About four minutes later, Josue De Paz clinched the win for the Bison, scoring off an assist from David Estrada.
Helker finished with three saves, while Spencer had two.
OC's home opener will be Saturday against another local rival, Southern Nazarene. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
