Box Score ODESSA, Texas (April 9, 2016) – Oklahoma Christian baseball coach
Lonny Cobble had placed a particular emphasis on his team's series at Texas-Permian Basin, as the Eagles had struggled, going 0-6 the last two years against UTPB.
That focus helped push the Eagles to complete a series sweep on Saturday at UTPB.
Relief pitchers
Dylon Sturges,
Garett Hill and
Jake Moore shut down the Falcons for six-plus innings to give their teammates time to rally, and
Robert Rosser delivered a critical two-run single in the seventh inning to give OC a 5-4 win at Roden Field.
OC (20-15, 10-5 Heartland Conference) stayed in sole possession of third place in the league standings, a game behind co-leaders Lubbock Christian (Texas) and St. Edward's (Texas). The Eagles completed their first conference series sweep of the season and now have won four of their five Heartland series.
As they did in the first two games of the series on Friday, the Eagles took a first-inning lead.
Alex Polston singled to right field to lead off, stole second base and scored on Rosser's single to left field.
UTPB (11-26, 3-12) jumped on OC starter
Bradley Horn for four hits and three runs in the second, with Alex Fernandez delivering an RBI single, David Fetkenher hitting a sacrifice fly and Chase Dillon drawing a bases-loaded walk.
The Falcons had three more hits in the third inning, taking a 4-1 lead when Fetkenher's single through the right side of the infield scored Jack Miller. After a single by Fernandez, Sturges relieved Horn and escaped the jam, then allowed only two hits in the next two innings.
Garett Hill (1-0) also threw two innings of two-hit scoreless baseball and was the beneficiary of the Eagles' rally. OC scored twice in the fifth, with
Zac Cobble's single to center scoring
Jared Sterling (who had been hit by a pitch) and
Derek Jones' double down the left-field line bringing home Cobble.
In the seventh, the Eagles took the lead with two more runs. UTPB reliever Zach Odden (1-1) hit Polston with a pitch and Jones drew a walk. Polston and Jones pulled off a double steal ahead of Rosser's two-run single to center field.
Moore entered the game for OC to start the eighth inning and allowed only one hit while striking out three batters and recording his second save of the season.
The Eagles will host Northwestern Oklahoma State on Tuesday in a nonconference game before playing the second of three straight Heartland series on the road, at Oklahoma Panhandle State next Friday and Saturday.
