Box Score 2 OKLAHOMA CITY (April 28, 2016) –
Kyle Lacy's RBI double with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning lifted Oklahoma Christian past Lubbock Christian (Texas) 6-5 on Thursday in the opening game of a critical Heartland Conference baseball series.
Lubbock Christian rebounded to take the series' second game 13-3 on Thursday night at Dobson Field, setting up the decisive game, scheduled for 1 p.m. on Friday.
OC (26-18, 15-8 Heartland) remained in third place in the Heartland standings, two games behind second-place Lubbock Christian. LCU (32-14, 17-6) saw its hopes to perhaps host the Heartland Conference postseason tournament damaged, as the split left the Chaparrals two games behind league-leading St. Edward's (Texas) in the loss column.
The top four teams make the conference tournament. OC is one game ahead of fourth-place Newman (Kan.) in the loss column and two games ahead of fifth-place St. Mary's (Texas), which swept a doubleheader Thursday at Arkansas-Fort Smith.
In the opener, Lacy walked, stole second base and scored on a double by
Jared Sterling in the sixth inning to tie the game at 4-4. Sterling finished with three RBIs, having also delivered a two-run double in the second inning.
Lubbock Christian answered with a run in the top of the seventh. Brandon Rix reached on an infield single and pinch-runner Josh Narvais moved to second base when Hunter McCall was hit by a pitch. With two outs, Tony Reyes' single to center field scored Narvais to put the Chaparrals up 5-4.
But the Chaparrals' defense fell apart in the bottom of the seventh. OC pinch-hitter
Lane Paul reached on a throwing error by McFall, the second baseman.
Derek Jones tried to sacrifice pinch-runner
Garrett Wages up a base, but Jones reached base instead on a throwing error by pitcher Albert Areytia (2-7) and Wages ended up on third base.
Robert Rosser struck out before
Jake Baxter's sacrifice fly scored Wages to tie the game. Lacy followed with his double and Jones roared around the bases to score the winning run, setting off a wild celebration by the Eagles.
Reliever
Jake Moore (4-1) picked up the pitching win for OC.
Lubbock Christian jumped to a 5-0 lead after two innings against OC starter
Dylan Fazekas (3-4). Rosser's two-run double keyed a three-run third for OC that pulled the Eagles within 5-3, but they managed only two hits the rest of the way against Lubbock Christian starter Brent Bezio (5-1).
The Chaparrals finished with 17 hits, including three apiece by Reyes, Jesse Pintado and Brandon Urquizo. The game ended after eight innings due to the 10-run rule.
