Box Score OKLAHOMA CITY (April 2, 2016) – Oklahoma Christian's bats came alive Saturday afternoon at Dobson Field, as evidenced by the Eagles' 14 hits, but Newman (Kan.) kept right on hitting, too, and scoring runs in bunches.
Newman had 16 hits, using a four-run first inning to seize control and a five-run seventh inning to put away the game en route to a 13-7 win that gave the Jets the victory in the three-game series between the teams.
Newman (21-10, 8-4 Heartland Conference) moved into a first-place tie in the league standings with St. Edward's (Texas) and Lubbock Christian (Texas), while OC (16-15, 7-5) dropped into a fourth-place tie with Arkansas-Fort Smith.
The Eagles lost a conference series for the first time all season, having earlier recorded series wins against St. Edward's, Rogers State and Texas A&M International.
The Jets jumped on OC starter
Jared Sterling (1-3) early, as he didn't make it out of the first inning. Garett Thomas' two-run homer was the big blow as the Jets went up 4-0. Newman made it 5-0 in the second on a solo home run by Tyler Bugner.
The Eagles pulled within 5-1 in the bottom of the second as
Ben McKenzie singled and scored on
Zac Cobble's sacrifice fly, but Newman added two more runs in the fourth to go up 7-1.
Alex Polston's two-run double to left-center field in the fourth and a solo home run by
Jake Baxter (his league-leading 13th longball of the season) made it 7-4 and gave the Eagles hope.
But the Jets essentially sealed the win with a five-run seventh, taking advantage of two OC errors to go with three hits. Lucas Norton hit a two-run single during the outburst. McKenzie hit a two-run double for OC during a three-run eighth inning, but the Eagles couldn't close the gap further.
Newman starter Kane McCarthy (4-2) pitched five innings to pick up the win for the Jets.
McKenzie had three hits for OC, while Polston, Baxter, Cobble and
Robert Rosser had two each. Nick Griffin had four hits and Bugner and Thomas had three each for the Jets, with Thomas finishing with four RBIs.
OC will visit longtime rival Southern Nazarene on Tuesday before heading to Odessa, Texas, for a conference series next Friday and Saturday at Texas-Permian Basin.
