Box Score OKLAHOMA CITY (April 12, 2016) – In the annals of walk-off wins, it was an odd one, but the Oklahoma Christian Eagles will take it nonetheless.
Jake Baxter reached on a ninth-inning throwing error, took second on a bunt single by
Kyle Lacy, then came around to score on a wild pitch and a passed ball on successive pitches, allowing the Eagles to beat Northwestern Oklahoma State 9-8 on a chilly spring night at Dobson Field.
OC (21-15), which completed a three-game season sweep of nonconference foe Northwestern (12-28), will take a season-best five-game winning streak into its Heartland Conference series at Oklahoma Panhandle State on Thursday and Friday.
OC never led the Rangers until a four-run sixth inning, highlighted by a two-run double by
Derek Jones and another RBI double by Baxter, with the latter putting the Eagles up 8-5.
The Eagles' bullpen had blanked Northwestern for four straight innings before the eighth, when the Rangers took advantage of a misplayed fly ball with two outs and eventually tied the game on a three-run double to left-center field by Jeremy Smith off OC reliever
Joe Dell Williams.
The Rangers threatened in the ninth, putting runners on first and third base against Lacy with two outs, but OC closer
Jake Moore (3-1) came in to strike out pinch-hitter Jacob Long.
Baxter led off the ninth and looked to be out before shortstop Christian Hammerl's throw sailed high over the glove of first baseman Matt Benn, allowing Baxter to reach base. Lacy then laid down an exquisite bunt along the first-base line and beat it out.
That brought up junior
Chase Kuwitzky, who had entered the game as a defensive substitute in the eighth inning. Facing hard-throwing Northwestern reliever Kyle Renbarger, Kuwitzky tried to bunt, but clipped the ball foul.
The second pitch by Renbarger (0-1) sailed over catcher Greg Marco's head, allowing the runners to advance. The Rangers then decided to intentionally walk Kuwitzky, but Renbarger's next pitch went off Marco's glove and Baxter sprinted home with the game-winner.
Jones led OC's 14-hit attack, going 3-for-5 with three RBIs, while
Ben McKenzie added three hits and Baxter went 2-for-5 with two RBIs. Smith and Cooper Stanley each went 3-for-5 for Northwestern, which had 12 hits.
OC's series against Oklahoma Panhandle State had been scheduled for Friday and Saturday, but with rain forecast in Goodwell this weekend, the teams opted to move the series up a day. Thursday's doubleheader will start at 1 p.m. and Friday's game is scheduled for a noon start, but could be earlier than that, depending on weather conditions.
