Box Score 2 OKLAHOMA CITY (April 1, 2016) – Oklahoma Christian didn't generate much offense in a doubleheader against Newman (Kan.) on Friday afternoon, but pitchers
Brennan Walker and
Jake Moore made sure the Eagles still came away with a split.
Walker and Moore combined to limit Newman to five hits, allowing OC to edge the Jets 3-2 in the second baseball game at Dobson Field, after Newman had taken the opener 8-1. The teams will play the rubber match of the three-game series on Saturday at noon.
OC (16-14, 7-4 Heartland Conference) and Newman (20-10, 7-4) are tied with Arkansas-Fort Smith for second in the league race, 1½ games behind St. Edward's (Texas). OC will be seeking its fourth conference series win in as many tries, having already won two of three against St. Edward's, Rogers State and Texas A&M International.
Walker (4-1) moved into OC's weekend rotation at the start of conference play and has shined ever since, as the Eagles are unbeaten in his four starts against Heartland foes. Against Newman, he retired eight straight batters in one stretch and allowed only single runs in the fourth and the sixth.
Moore came into the game and after giving up an RBI single to Newman's Tyler Bugner, he allowed only one more baserunner in his 2 1/3 innings. He retired the final five Jets he faced while recording his first save at OC.
Newman pitcher Dylan Porter (3-2) went the distance and allowed only five hits, but one of those was a two-run double to right field in the first inning, after Porter hit leadoff batter
Alex Polston with a pitch and
Derek Jones followed with a single.
The Eagles scratched out what proved to be the decisive run in the fifth, as
Jared Sterling singled to right to lead off the inning and eventually scored when Newman second baseman Jacob Hamerle couldn't handle a two-out grounder by Polston.
In the opener, the Jets knocked out OC starter
Bradley Horn (4-3) after just 2 2/3 innings, scoring three in the first inning, two more in the second and one in the third. Nick Griffin and Lucas Norton each had three of the Jets' 13 hits and Griffin, Norton and Garett Thomas all had two RBIs apiece.
Newman starter Lucas Schauer (6-1) carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning before Polston broke it up with a clean single to left field. Sterling followed with a bloop single to right field that scored
Ben McKenzie, who had drawn a leadoff walk. Schauer went the distance, allowing four hits.
