Eagles miss chances to win, fall in 11 to Southwestern

Jake Baxter hit his 12th home run of the season in the loss to Southwestern Oklahoma State.
Box Score OKLAHOMA CITY (March 29, 2016) – Southwestern Oklahoma State shut down Oklahoma Christian's two late chances to win and scored three runs in the 11th inning to beat the Eagles 10-7 on a windy Tuesday night at Dobson Field.

OC (15-13) rallied from a 7-1 deficit, but the Eagles stranded 13 baserunners, including runners in scoring position in both the ninth and 10th innings. That allowed Southwestern (18-10) to complete a sweep of the teams' two meetings this baseball season.

Southwestern led 7-1 after scoring four runs in the top of the sixth, but OC answered with five runs in the bottom of the inning. Jake Baxter hit a two-run home run, his Heartland Conference-leading 12th longball of the season, and Zac Cobble and Alex Polston added run-scoring hits for the Eagles.

The Eagles tied the game in the eighth, as pinch-hitter Brady Baugh drew a walk and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Derek Jones. OC had runners on first and third base with one out in the ninth after a Southwestern error, but Southwestern reliever Jeremy Smith (1-1) struck out Baugh and Austin Orth to end the threat.

Consecutive two-out singles by Jones and pinch-hitter Garrett Wages put OC in position again in the 10th before Smith retired Baxter on a hard line drive to left field.

Southwestern's C.J. Faddis drew a leadoff walk in the 11th from Joe Dell Williams (0-1), the last of eight pitchers used by OC. With two outs, Joshua Santos singled home Faddis. Korbin Polston then singled and Santos and Korbin Polston scored on a double down the left-field line by Jacob Spring.

OC had a pair of baserunners in the bottom of the 11th, but one was retired on a double-play grounder and the other was stranded when Southwestern reliever Quinton Doughterty fanned Orth to end the game. Doughterty recorded his first save of the season.

Baxter, Jones and Robert Rosser each had two of OC's 12 hits and Baxter finished with three RBIs. He also leads the Heartland in that category, with 37.

OC will host Heartland rival Newman (Kan.) in a doubleheader on Friday starting at noon.
