Box Score DURANT, Okla. (Feb. 9, 2016) – Oklahoma Christian rallied from a six-run deficit to take a four-run lead, but the Eagles couldn't hang on, falling 14-13 in 10 innings to Southeastern Oklahoma State on Tuesday afternoon at The Ballpark in Durant.
Bryson Allen's one-out single to left-center field in the bottom of the 10th scored Tim Hunter to give the Savage Storm the win in a baseball game with many wild momentum swings throughout its 3½ hours.
Southeastern (3-3) and OC (3-1) combined for 36 hits. Twelve of the Eagles' 17 hits went for extra bases, five of those for home runs, including back-to-back-to-back shots by
Ben McKenzie,
Derek Jones and
Jake Baxter in the eighth inning.
Jones had two home runs and a double and Baxter had a home run and two doubles. Jones posted OC's first multiple-homer day since
Kolton Brown hit two at home against Southeastern last April 6.
OC's
Kyle Lacy went 3-for-4 with four RBIs, a homer and a double. Jones, Baxter and
Zac Cobble also had three hits each for the Eagles.
OC jumped ahead 2-0 in the top of the first before Southeastern took a 5-2 lead in the second on a grand slam by Dylan Helms. The Savage Storm extended that lead to 9-3 thanks to three runs in the fourth and a solo home run in the fifth by Logan Terwilliger.
The Eagles rallied with consecutive five-run outbursts in the seventh and eighth innings. Cobble tied the game at 9-9 with an RBI single in the eighth before McKenzie, Jones and Baxter went on their homer streak against Southeastern reliever Brady Colbert to put OC up 13-9.
Southeastern rallied with four runs in the ninth, two of those on a double by Terwilliger, who had four RBIs, as did Helms. Allen's one-out double scored Kaleb Thomas to tie the game, but OC reliever
Dylan Fazekas (0-1) recorded two strikeouts, the latter one with the bases loaded, to escape the jam.
Jones doubled with two outs in the 10th for OC but was stranded. Hunter walked against Fazekas to lead off the 10th and moved to third base on two wild pitches before scoring on Allen's single to end the game.
Southeastern reliever Mathew Benedict (1-1) picked up the pitching win with two shutout innings.
OC will return to action this weekend in the Southern Arkansas Invitational in Magnolia, Ark. The Eagles will face Central Missouri and Southern Arkansas on Friday and Washburn (Kan.) on Saturday.
