Box Score KINGSVILLE, Texas (Feb. 5, 2016) –
Dillon Fazekas made his Oklahoma Christian baseball debut one to remember and gave his coach a milestone win in the process on Friday night.
The junior transfer from Seminole State clubbed a three-run double with two outs in the top of the ninth inning and OC relievers
Jake Collins and
Dylon Sturges made it stand up as the Eagles downed Texas A&M-Kingsville 4-3 at Nolan Ryan Field in a season-opening battle of top-10 NCAA Division II South Central Region teams.
The win was the 100th at the collegiate level for OC coach
Lonny Cobble, who is starting his fourth campaign with the Eagles after a long run at Edmond Santa Fe High School, where he recorded more than 500 wins.
Few of his wins at either level probably matched the dramatics of the one on Friday. OC (1-0), No. 8 in the preseason region rankings, had managed only two hits and one run through eight innings and trailed 3-1 before coming alive in the ninth against the Javelinas, who were seventh in the preseason regional poll.
With one out, A&M-Kingsville reliever Hunter Lehman hit
Robert Rosser with a pitch.
Austin Orth followed with a double down the left-field line and
Kyle Lacy drew a walk to load the bases.
Ben McKenzie flew out to right field, but not deep enough to score Rosser from third. Fazekas took care of that, and also brougham home Orth and Lacy, with his double that put the Eagles ahead.
Collins recorded two quick outs in the bottom of the ninth before walking Wesley Aguilar. Sturges came on to retire pinch-hitter Chad Vanaman on a foul ball to end the game and record the save.
"We talked about playing to the last out and they never panicked," Cobble said. "We struck out too many times, but we came up big when needed. I really love the makeup of our team and the unselfish attitude they have about each other."
Collins pitched 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief to earn the win after OC starter
Jared Sterling – who sat out last season after transferring from Central Oklahoma – allowed six hits and three runs while striking out nine in six innings of work.
"Our pitchers kept us in the game," Cobble said. "I am very proud of them."
Cobble became the third coach in OC baseball history to win at least 100 games, joining Johnny Inman (389 from 1987-2001) and Max Dobson (280 from 1967-1980).
Cobble said the most exciting thing about his 100th win at OC was that his son
Zac Cobble and three other current Eagles –
Kyle Lacy,
Austin Peck and Sturges – were also on the Edmond Santa Fe team when he recorded win No. 500 at the high school level.
"I just like being on the right side of that,"
Lonny Cobble said.
The teams will finish their three-game series with a doubleheader on Saturday, starting at noon.
