Box Score OKLAHOMA CITY (Oct. 13, 2016) – It's pretty much a guarantee that when Oklahoma Christian and Newman (Kan.) meet, there's going to be drama, and
Anthony Buchanan provided it for the Eagles on Thursday.
The junior forward scored less than two minutes into the second overtime, lifting OC to a 3-2 win over the Jets on a chilly, damp night at the Eagle Soccer Field.
The win kept OC (4-8-1, 2-6-1 Heartland Conference) on the fringe of contention for the league's postseason tournament, especially coming against divisional foe Newman (6-5-2, 4-3-2). That it was a close game wasn't surprising at all – since OC joined the Heartland with the 2012 season, the eight games between the Eagles and Jets all have been decided by one goal or less.
Four of those have gone into overtime, and OC has won three of them with golden goals, having also accomplished that feat in 2012 and 2013. This time, the Eagles beat Newman after twice trailing in the match, something that encouraged OC coach
David Scott.
"It's been a tough season, but these guys have not quit," Scott said. "They kept pushing and they were rewarded against a good opponent. We found a way to score, which had been a problem of late."
The game seemed to go in waves, with each team controlling the action for long stretches. After OC held the advantage for much of the first 15 minutes, the Jets answered and went up 1-0 on Luca Anelli's 10-yard volley in the 22nd minute and nearly scored again in the 36th minute when Jamie Barkway's shot banged off the crossbar.
But
Ante Susic tied the game for OC just seconds after Barkway's shot, taking a pass from
Taylor Vanderford and beating Newman goalkeeper Calum Dillon. Vanderford almost had a goal of his own in the 42nd minute, but his header also hit off the crossbar.
A defensive breakdown led to Newman's second goal, in the 63rd minute. OC defenders weren't able to clear a loose ball near the goal and Newman's Carlos Rubio Garcia appeared to deflect the ball into the net off OC goalkeeper
Evan Helker, after Helker had made a save moments earlier.
Once again, the Eagles responded. Buchanan passed into the center of the field to a driving
Cody Cook, who beat Dillon from about six yards out to tie the match in the 77th minute.
Newman controlled the first 10-minute overtime session, not allowing a shot by the Eagles, but OC became the aggressor in the second OT and earned a free kick early on. Vanderford took it from about 35 yards out and looped it in, forcing Dillon to knock it away. The loose ball caromed to OC's
Braydan Castrop, who touched it to Buchanan in front of the goal.
Given the opportunity, Buchanan easily converted, setting off a raucous celebration by the Eagles.
"That was a great free kick, and then great awareness by Braydan to see Anthony there," Scott said.
Newman outshot the Eagles 26-17. Dillon finished with five saves, while Helker had seven for the Eagles.
OC will return to action on Saturday, when the Eagles host another divisional rival, No. 15-ranked Midwestern State (Texas) at 7 p.m.
