Missed opportunities haunt Eagles in loss to Mid-America Christian

OC's Braydan Castrop celebrates after scoring in the first half on Tuesday night against Mid-America Christian.
Box Score OKLAHOMA CITY (Sept. 15, 2015) – Oklahoma Christian left the Eagle Soccer Field frustrated on Tuesday night.

Braydan Castrop scored his first career goal, but OC couldn't make an early lead stand up and fell 2-1 to Mid-America Christian in the Eagles' first game with a retooled lineup.

OC (2-2) has lost numerous offensive standouts with season-ending ailments, most recently leading scorer Anthony Buchanan, leaving coach David Scott to revamp the Eagles' look. One of his moves was putting Castrop in the role of primary attacker against MACU (3-2), an old rival from OC's days in the NAIA.

Castrop made that decision appear wise in the first half. He hit the left post with a shot in the eighth minute, then put OC ahead in the 28th minute, taking a pass from Cesar Zepeda and firing from about 15 yards out past MACU goalkeeper Tyler McIntosh.

In the 36th minute came a game-changing play. Castrop took a pass and drove into the MACU penalty box, setting up a one-on-one situation between himself and McIntosh. MACU defender Peterson Neri drug Castrop down from behind in the penalty box, but no foul was called and officials allowed play to continue, much to the chagrin of the OC sideline.

The Evangels tied it up in the 40th minute on a 25-yard blast by Martin Mata. MACU took the lead in the 64th minute, on a play that started with a free kick by Anas Bellaarbia from the left side of the field. His kick found Kevin Cabello, who headed it across the goal to teammate Gleydson Neri, who headed it past OC goalkeeper Evan Helker.

OC, going into a strong south wind, managed only one shot on goal after falling behind.

MACU outshot the Eagles 13-10. Helker made four saves, while McIntosh had two for the Evangels.

OC will return to action Saturday, when the Eagles will host NCAA Division II power Northeastern State at 2 p.m.
