Box Score OKLAHOMA CITY (Nov. 1, 2015) – Oklahoma Christian kept coming back and coming back from adversity the entire season, so perhaps it's not surprising the Eagles rallied twice on Sunday in the season finale against Newman (Kan.).
But a third comeback didn't happen against the Jets. Pedro Augusto scored in the 81st minute and Newman made that goal hold up for a 3-2 win at the Eagle Soccer Field.
OC (8-9-1, 2-5-1 Heartland Conference) lost despite outshooting Newman by a 24-14 count, but the Eagles still posted the program's best record since the 2011 season. Newman (10-7-1, 5-3) ended up finishing second in the Heartland race to qualify for this week's conference tournament in Austin, Texas.
The Eagles controlled the game in the opening minutes, but Newman scored the game's first goal on its first scoring opportunity, in the 15th minute. Newman's Kieran Laking sent a corner kick into the penalty box, which Jamie Barkway headed toward the goal. OC goalkeeper
Evan Helker made the save but the rebound caromed back to Barkway, who headed the ball into the net.
It didn't take long for OC to answer. From a few steps inside the midfield line,
Stephen Tower sent a leading pass into
Sergio Flores, who one-touched it to a charging
Seth Brown. Brown beat Newman goalkeeper Calum Dillon to tie the game at 1-1 in the 24th minute.
The Jets again took the lead in the 39th minute, as Laking assisted on a goal by Luca Anelli, whose volley from just inside the penalty box beat Helker.
Again, OC answered. In the 56th minute, senior
Brandon Little Axe tapped the ball to
Braydan Castrop, who put a strike from about 25 yards into the top left corner of the net.
Augusto subbed into the in the 80th minute, and less than a minute later, he scored on a volley from the edge of the box, with the assist going to Anelli.
OC's best chance to tie the game in the final minutes came in the 89th minute, when a Newman defender blocked a strong shot by Brown.
Newman, trying to run out the clock, picked up two yellow cards – issued against Barkway and Laking – in the final minute for arguing with the referee.
Helker finished the game with six saves, while Dillon had three for the Jets.
The game was the final one for Little Axe and fellow senior
Daniel Bolin, who saw action briefly in the second half. OC honored those two, along with walk-on
Jared Punjabi and
Fraol Legesse (who missed the season due to injury) in a ceremony after the game.
