Late goals give Eastern New Mexico win over thin OC squad

OC senior Brandon Little Axe scored his third goal of the season in the loss to Eastern New Mexico.
Box Score OKLAHOMA CITY (Oct. 29, 2015) – Probably the last thing a banged-up, low-on-depth Oklahoma Christian squad needed on Thursday night was an up-and-down-the-field type of soccer game, but that's what Eastern New Mexico brought to the Eagle Soccer field.

Through 79 minutes, OC hung with the Greyhounds, but Eastern New Mexico eventually broke through with two late goals to post a 3-1 win in a nonconference matchup.

OC (8-8-1) played without its leading scorer, Ante Susic, and one of its best defenders, Clay Collier, in addition to numerous other players who have suffered injuries throughout the season that have decimated the Eagles' roster. The Eagles had only four field-position reserves suited up and used three of them, meaning the majority of OC players went the full 90 minutes without a break.

The Eagles just missed taking an early lead when Taylor Vanderford banged a free kick from about 20 yards off the crossbar. Eastern New Mexico went ahead in the 32nd minute, when Roberto Zatarain scored on a volley from about 10 yards out off a cross from Ryan McManus.

After halftime, it took the Eagles a little more than three minutes to equalize. Sergio Flores sent a screamer of a shot toward the goal which Eastern New Mexico goalkeeper James Gutierrez blocked, but couldn't control. The ball bounded straight to OC senior Brandon Little Axe, whose shot from 18 yards tied the game in the 49th minute.

OC kept the pressure up, forcing Gutierrez to make another one of his seven saves, on a shot by Flores in the 50th minute. But that proved to be the Eagles' last good scoring chance.

Zatarain scored his team-high eighth goal of the season to put the Greyhounds up 2-1 in the 80th minute, taking an assist from Ryan Sinclair and scoring on another close-in volley. As OC tried to push numbers forward offensively, looking for another equalizer, the Greyhounds took advantage in the 88th minute, with Carlos Viveros scoring from about 15 yards out to make it 3-1.

Behind their frenetic attack, the Greyhounds outshot OC 32-16. OC goalkeeper Evan Helker, the reigning Heartland Conference defensive player of the week, made eight saves.

OC will close its season on Saturday at noon against Heartland foe Newman (Kan.), seeking what would be the Eagles' first winning season since 2011.
