Box Score 2 SAN ANTONIO (April 25, 2014) – Oklahoma Christian added another big win on Friday to what has been a baseball season full of them.
Brandon Pierce pitched five solid innings and
Robert Rosser had four RBIs as OC beat No. 15-ranked St. Mary's (Texas) 8-3 in the opening game of a doubleheader at Dickson Stadium.
St. Mary's rebounded behind Rene Solis' complete-game four-hitter to win the second game 2-0. That sets up an intriguing rubber game on Saturday in a series between an established Heartland Conference and NCAA Division II power in St. Mary's (21-15, 17-9 Heartland) and an up-and-coming Oklahoma Christian squad seeking to advance to that level.
The Rattlers entered the series ranked sixth in the Division II South Central Region, while OC (27-15, 15-11) was seventh. With Friday's split, OC remained fourth in the Heartland standings, but the Eagles' lead over fifth-place Newman (Kan.) now is down to one game. Both teams have four league games left.
The Eagles quickly jumped on St. Mary's starter Mario Maldonado (2-4) in the opener.
A.J. Florence reached on a three-base error on the game's second pitch and one pitch later,
Caleb Price doubled down the right-field line to give OC the lead. Rosser also had a run-scoring single in the three-run first inning.
Rosser's two-run single in the third inning put the Eagles up 5-2 and he had another RBI single in a two-run fifth, after which OC led 7-2. Rosser also had a pair of stolen bases in the game.
Pierce (8-3) allowed three runs (two earned) but just four hits in five innings before giving way to the OC bullpen.
Eddie Broll and
Dillon Endecott each pitched a scoreless inning to seal the win for the Eagles.
Solis (11-2) was masterful in the second game, finishing with eight strikeouts and no walks and allowing only one OC baserunner to advance as far as third base.
The Rattlers scored one run each in the first and second innings off OC starter
Luke Sandoval (2-2), who was the hard-luck loser after allowing seven hits in five innings. Nathan Humpal had a RBI double in the first for St. Mary's and Maldonado doubled and scored in the second to make it 2-0.
