Cleveland’s sacrifice fly provides winning margin in 3-2 decision over SNU

Box Score

OKLAHOMA CITY (March 25, 2014) – As it often does in Oklahoma Christian-Southern Nazarene meetings in most every sport, Tuesday's baseball game went down to the final pitch. This time, it was OC making the plays to win.

Caden Cleveland's sacrifice fly in the seventh inning scored A.J. Florence with the tiebreaking run and Tyler Schuman and Dillon Endecott each pitched a shutout inning in relief, lifting the Eagles past SNU 3-2 in a nonconference game at Dobson Field.

OC (16-8), ranked seventh in the NCAA Division II South Central Region, extended its winning streak to five games, all of which have come against former Sooner Athletic Conference foes. The Eagles beat current NAIA No. 2 Oklahoma Baptist last Tuesday, then swept current Heartland Conference rival Rogers State in a three-game set before holding off SNU (11-18).

It was a back-and-forth affair, with OC punching and the Crimson Storm battling back. The Eagles went up 1-0 in the first inning, as Markus Carr walked and scored on a sacrifice fly by Cameron Keener. SNU tied the game in the second, with Kyle Fultz doubling and eventually scoring on a balk by OC starter Kacy Cook.

OC answered in the bottom of the inning, taking a 2-1 lead when Garrett Stephenson singled and scored on a single by Florence. The Eagles held the lead until the top of the seventh, when SNU again tied the game against reliever Zach Loomis (2-1), with Ryan O'Donnell doubling and scoring on an error.

But in the bottom of the inning, the Eagles went ahead for good. Florence walked leading off against SNU reliever Michael Descisciolo (2-2). One out later, Florence stole second base. After Robert Rosser walked, Blake Stringer reached on an error by O'Donnell, the SNU shortstop, loading the bases.

Cleveland pinch-hit for Keener and his fly ball to right field was enough to bring home Florence.

Schuman pitched a scoreless eighth for the Eagles, then Endecott threw a scoreless ninth to record his third save of the season.

OC will host McMurry (Texas) in a Heartland Conference series on Friday and Saturday.
