Stringer’s grand slam turns tide, Eagles roll to doubleheader sweep at Rogers State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CLAREMORE, Okla. (March 21, 2014) – With one swing of the bat, Oklahoma Christian senior Blake Stringer changed the entire course of the Eagles' doubleheader at Rogers State on Friday.

OC trailed 5-0 in the fifth before Stringer unloaded a grand slam over the left-center field wall at the Diamond Sports Complex, starting an offensive barrage that didn't end until the Eagles had completed a sweep of the Hillcats, winning 11-5 and 10-1.

OC (14-8, 9-5 Heartland Conference) will play for its third league series sweep of the baseball season on Saturday at Rogers State (12-12, 5-9), a program less than two seasons removed from playing in the NAIA championship game and one that made back-to-back trips to the NAIA World Series before joining OC in the NCAA Division II Heartland this season.

The Hillcats appeared well on their way to an easy win in the first game, scoring five runs off OC starter Tyler Sturges in the first two innings. Zach Loomis (1-1) came in to silence the Hillcats' bats and the Eagles eventually got to Rogers State starter Mason Marquette in the fifth.

Two walks and a hit batsman preceded Stringer's home run. Travis Teague (0-1) replaced Marquette in the sixth but faced only two batters and didn't record an out before giving way to T.J. Law. Cory Eastwood's sacrifice fly eventually tied the game and A.J. Florence followed with a two-run triple to right-center field before scoring on a wild pitch, making it 8-5.

OC added three more runs in the seventh, one on a single by Cameron Keener and two on a single by Eastwood.

Loomis pitched three shutout innings and Tyler Schuman and Dillon Endecott held Rogers State in check the rest of the way.

The Eagles picked up in the second game where they'd left off, seizing control with a four-run second inning against Rogers State starter Kyle Duncan (3-1). A.J. Florence delivered a bases-loaded double and later scored on Markus Carr's single to left-center field.

OC added two more runs in both the third and fourth innings, with Caleb Price, Jordan Lopez and Robert Rosser each delivering a run-scoring double, to make it 8-1. Kolton Brown added a RBI double in a two-run ninth inning for the Eagles, who finished with 15 hits – seven of those for extra bases.

Brandon Pierce (4-2) allowed five hits and one run in six innings of work, striking out eight, to pick up the pitching win for OC.
