Box Score OKLAHOMA CITY (March 11, 2014) – Oklahoma Christian is proving that it's not over until it's over. The latest example came Tuesday night at Dobson Field against Southwestern Oklahoma State.
OC rallied from a three-run deficit in the final two innings before Sean Murphy doubled and scored on a wild pitch in the 10th inning, lifting the Eagles to a 7-6 win and extending their winning streak to seven games – the longest since the university revived the baseball program in 2008.
OC (11-5), which debuted this week in the NCAA Division II South Central Region rankings at No. 9, completed a two-game regular-season sweep of nonconference foe Southwestern (11-8) and snapped the Bulldogs' eight-game winning streak.
"It's the second time in less than two weeks that we've come from behind late in the game," OC coach Lonny Cobble said. "It's going to help us down the road build some character. We've preached to the boys all year that we're never out of it until the last out. … I'm just very proud of the way the guys battled. They're not quitting on us. They're playing until the last out is made."
Southwestern took a 6-3 lead in the sixth on a grand slam by Chris Faulkner, which came after two singles and a walk loaded the bases.
Robert Rosser pulled OC within 6-5 with a two-run single in the eighth that scored Jordan Lopez and Blake Stringer, who had earlier singled. In the ninth, Markus Carr drew a leadoff walk, moved up to second and third base on a pair of groundouts, then scored the tying run on a single to right field by Lopez.
Murphy, who entered the game as a defensive replacement in the sixth inning, led off the 10th with a double to right field off Southwestern reliever Travis Leverett (3-1). Murphy advanced to third base on Zac Cobble's groundout, then scored on a wild pitch by Leverett.
That made a winner of OC reliever Garrett Guys (1-0), who was the Eagles' ninth pitcher of the game. Guys pitched two innings, while the other eight threw one inning apiece. Collectively, they limited the Bulldogs to eight hits.
"We like the way the team's rolling," Lonny Cobble said. "We're excited about the direction of the program. … I think it's a testament to the boys. These guys have worked hard for us and they want to win. We told them that good teams win games like that and we feel like we're becoming a pretty good team."
Stringer finished 3-for-5 for OC, while Zach Mang led Southwestern with two hits. The Bulldogs stranded 15 baserunners.
