OC’s win streak ends at 5 with 12-6 loss at league rival Newman

WICHITA, Kan. (March 12, 2013) – Ruben Marrero went 4-for-5 with five RBIs and Newman (Kan.) snapped Oklahoma Christian's five-game winning streak, beating the Eagles 12-6 on Tuesday at McCarthy Field.

In the first meeting of the teams as Heartland Conference foes, Newman (10-9) jumped on OC starter Tyler Schuman for six runs in the second inning to take an 8-1 lead, then added four insurance runs in the sixth off OC reliever Daniel Sawyer.

In the second, Jerrod Flax and Marrero each had a two-run single off Schuman (0-2). Ryan Nash came in and blanked the Jets for 3 1/3 innings, but Newman had another big inning after Nash left the game. Marrero had another two-run single against Sawyer in the sixth.

Down 12-3, OC (11-8) rallied with three runs in the seventh. Blake Stringer, named earlier in the day as the NCAA Division II South Central Regional hitter of the week, delivered an RBI triple during that outburst and finished 2-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored.

Garrett Guys, who went 2-for-4, also had a run-scoring double during the seventh for the Eagles. Jordan Lopez also had two hits for OC.

Newman reliever Brandon Mercer (1-0) picked up the pitching win.

OC has home baseball games scheduled for the next four days, with Northwestern Oklahoma State visiting on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
