Lady Eagles stuff No. 6 LCU

Oklahoma Christian University's women's basketball team never trailed and knocked off No. 6 Lubbock Christian University (Texas) 72-64 here Saturday afternoon Jan. 6.

The victory was the first over a ranked opponent for the Lady Eagles this year.

The win ran Oklahoma Christian's record to 9-2 overall and 2-0 in Sooner Athletic Conference play after defeating Wayland Baptist (Texas) 58-41 on Jan. 4.

Oklahoma Christian started the game on a 9-0 run in the game's opening 2:30 and took a 35-24 advantage to the halftime break. LCU cut the lead to five on two occasions but never came closer in the half.

The 11-point halftime lead matched the Lady Eagles' largest of the year. OC senior Rachel Martin finished the first half with 13 points.

OC jumped to its largest margin of 14 when freshman Kailan DeCamp gathered a Lady Chap miss and took the ball coast to coast to make the score 46-32 at the 15:03 mark.

Behind 26 points on 6-of-8 shooting from beyond the arc from Ashley Hunter, LCU cut the lead to five points on four separate occasions in the second half, but could draw no closer.

Martin, Charlotte Heron and DeCamp all converted 2-of-2 free throws in the game's final minute to secure to win.

The Lady Eagles outrebounded LCU 44-31, including 20 offensive boards that they converted to 15 second-chance points.

Martin finished with a team-high 25 points along with six rebounds and four assists. Two other Lady Eagles reached double figures, with Katie Fariss netting 16 points and snagging nine rebounds while DeCamp chipped in 10 points.

The Lady Eagles next play Jan. 11 in a home matchup with conference rival Oklahoma Baptist. The women's contest tips at 6 p.m. with the men to follow at 8 p.m.
