Freshman Gabriela Carrillo was one of three OC women’s players to be named as an Intercollegiate Tennis Association Scholar Athlete.
SKILLMAN, N.J. (July 20, 2012) – Six Oklahoma Christian players have been named as Intercollegiate Tennis Association Scholar Athletes, while the OC women’s squad made the ITA’s NAIA All-Academic Team list.
OC’s men’s team – which captured the 2012 NAIA championship – had three individual honorees: Renardy Guelfi, a senior from Joinville, Brazil; Paulo Roessle, a junior from Sao Paulo; and Julio Pulido, a freshman from Caceras, Spain.
OC’s women, who reached the NAIA semifinals, also had three players earn honors: Marta Contel Miranzo, a senior from Valencia, Spain; Lucie Sipkova, a sophomore from Pardubice, Czech Republic; and Gabriela Carrillo, a freshman from Riobamba, Ecuador.
To qualify for the ITA Scholar Athlete designation, players had to be a varsity letter winner, have at least a 3.5 grade-point average on a 4.0 scale for the current academic year and have been enrolled at his or her present school for at least two semesters.
OC’s women’s team, which posted a cumulative 3.33 GPA, met the criteria for ITA All-Academic Team, which is a team GPA of 3.20 or above. Twenty-one NAIA women’s teams earned the designation. The Lady Eagles’ roster included Contel Miranzo, Sipkova, Carrillo, Hermon Brhane, Andreea Constantinescu and Maryfer Abreu Roman.
OC’s men posted a 3.19 team GPA, narrowly missing receiving the honor.
