Maryfer Abreu Roman is one of two returning women’s tennis players for OC in 2012-13.
OKLAHOMA CITY (Sept. 5, 2012) – Oklahoma Christian has added four new players to its women’s tennis roster as the Lady Eagles look to build off a strong finish this past spring.
Joining OC coach Kris Miller’s squad will be junior-college standout Barbora Bozkova and three freshmen – Angie Torres Quezada, Gisela Castany and Bright Phakamad.
Bozkova, from Ceske Budejovice, Czech Republic, played last season at Laredo (Texas) Community College. She was the National Junior College Athletic Association Division I runner-up at No. 1 singles this past May, helping Laredo to a fourth-place team finish. She finished the season at No. 5 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s NJCAA rankings.
Torres Quezada is from Bogota, Colombia. She played earlier this year in the All-Canadian ITF Junior Championships in Ontario. Castany, from Barcelona, has played in a handful of events in her native Spain and in Europe. Phakamad, from Krabi, Thailand, reached the quarterfinals in the 2010 Vietnam International Juniors Championships.
OC’s two returning players for 2012-13 are junior Maryfer Abreu Roman and sophomore Gabriela Carrillo. Two former OC players have transferred – Hermon Brhane to Oklahoma and Lucie Sipkova to California (Pa.) – and a third, Andreea Constantinescu, has left the program.
The Lady Eagles reached the NAIA semifinals last season, the best showing ever by an OC women’s team in any sport. OC will begin competing in the 2012-13 academic year in the National Christian College Athletic Association as the university begins the NCAA Division II membership process.
